Monsoon Season Driving Tips: Stay Safe on Arizona Roads

Arizona’s monsoon season which runs June 15th- September 30th, brings much needed rain but it also brings unpredictable weather, dust storms, and slick roads. Staying safe behind the wheel requires preparation and caution. At Spencer Auto Repair, we’re here to help you navigate the season with confidence.

1. Watch the Weather and Plan Ahead

Before heading out, check the forecast. Monsoon storms can roll in quickly, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. If a storm is expected, consider delaying your trip or adjusting your route to avoid dangerous conditions.

2. Slow Down on Wet Roads

Arizona roads can be especially slick during the first few minutes of rain due to oil buildup. Reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and avoid sudden movements that could lead to hydroplaning.

3. Never Enter a Flooded Road

Flash floods are common during monsoon season, and it only takes a few inches of water to sweep a vehicle away. If you see standing water, turn around, don’t drown. Look for alternate routes and never risk driving through flood-prone areas. Driving through flooded roadways can also do significant damage to your vehicle. In some cases, the water can even flood engines and cause catastrophic damage.

4. Be Ready for Dust Storms

Arizona’s infamous haboobs can reduce visibility to near zero in seconds. If you’re caught in a dust storm:

  • Pull off the road as far as possible.
  • Turn off your lights, set the parking brake, and take your foot off the brake pedal. These steps reduce the chances that other drivers mistake your vehicle as the one to follow.
  • Keep your foot off the brake and wait until visibility improves.

5. Check Your Tires, Wipers, and Brakes

Your vehicle’s tires, wipes, and brakes are your first line of defense against hazardous roads. Worn tires can lose traction in wet conditions, while failing brakes increase stopping distances. Visit Spencer Auto Repair for a quick inspection to ensure your car is ready for the season.

6. Use Your Headlights, But Avoid High Beams

During heavy rain or dust storms, turn on your headlights so other drivers can see you. However, avoid using high beams, as they can reflect off rain and dust, reducing visibility instead of improving it.

7. Stay Alert and Avoid Distractions

Monsoon conditions demand your full attention. Put away your phone, limit distractions, and keep both hands on the wheel. Staying focused can make all the difference when road conditions change suddenly.
